Checking the fit of a rigid card holder

A rigid holder must accommodate thickness as well as height and width. Check the complete combination before placing a card inside it.

Read the holder specification literally

Determine whether the holder opens along an edge, separates into two parts or uses another closure. Read the maker's intended card dimensions and thickness range. A product designed for a conventional thin card may not suit a thick memorabilia card, even when both have the same outline. Do not use the closing mechanism to compress the card until it fits.

Ask whether an inner sleeve is required, optional or incompatible with the design. If permitted, include that sleeve in your measurements and trial. Check that seams or folded corners will not sit beneath the card in a way that tilts it. An apparently generous exterior size can conceal a much smaller recessed space inside.

Inspect an empty sample under good light. Look for rough edges, debris and an uneven closure. Follow the manufacturer's assembly instructions without adding adhesive, improvised spacers or cleaning fluids. If the holder's surfaces or instructions are unclear, choose a product with a clearer specification rather than experimenting on a valued card.

Confirm fit before committing the collection

Use a low-value card of matching dimensions for the first trial. Support it while placing it in the intended recess or opening and stop at any resistance. In a two-part holder, the card must sit entirely inside its intended area before the cover is brought into place. Check every corner rather than assuming that a centred image means a centred card.

After closing the holder as directed, inspect from the front and the edges. The card should not be visibly bent, trapped in a seam or pressed by the closure. Excessive movement is also a reason to reconsider the fit. Do not shake the holder to test it; normal gentle handling is enough to reveal an obviously loose arrangement.

Write the successful holder reference and any sleeve used into your inventory notes. Keep thick cards or unusual formats listed as exceptions. If you later notice pressure marks, displacement or difficulty opening the holder, stop using that combination and seek suitable advice before attempting a forceful removal.
